Tuesday Tutorial: Spooky Little Ghosts
Remember to check back Thursday for a special guest and brand new giveaway!!!
This is a fabulous craft to do with your kids. Let me reiterate, “your kids.” Unless you’re Mary Poppins. I attempted this craft with about 10 kids at my sons’ birthday party, it was a little crazy, but the kids really liked them, and I think they’re just adorable!!
-K- this is SUPER easy, you’ll love it!
Supplies:
- cutting mat and rotary cutter
- cheesecloth
- fabric stiffener (you can get it at Joann’s or hobby lobby)
- black felt
- small balloons
- paper or Styrofoam cups
- fishing line
Step 1:
Cut your cheesecloth to the size you like. I kept it folded in half and then half again, to make it easier, and cut up the whole package (b/c I was making 15 ghosts). I cut them into 1nto 12 inch pieces.
Step 2: Blow up your balloons. Place them in the cup with the wide part of the balloon pointing up.
Step 3: Break out your fabric stiffener, and pour it into a bowl. (Be warned, your hands are about to turn into ooey-gooey messy hands) Dip the cheesecloth into the bowl and coat each section one at a time. You can unfold the cheesecloth all the way, keep it folded in half or even fourths, depending on the size you would like your ghost to be. I unfolded one of mine all the way, and thought it was a little too long. The rest I kept folded in half before draping it over the balloon.
Position the cheesecloth to a shape you like.
Step 4: Wait about 15-20 minutes for the stiffener to do it’s job. When the cheesecloth is completely dry, pop the balloon with a pin, and you’re left with a stiff, spooky ghost form.
Step 5: Now you’re just left with some finishing touches! Add some black felt eyes, rough up the ends.
Attach fishing line to the top (if you plan to hang your ghosts). And voila!! An easy, spooky, kid-friendly, Halloween craft!

These turned out great! I love projects that you can actually do with your kids (I tend to be too much of a perfectionist sometimes to take on some of the bigger projects with them!) My boys would love these!
So cute!! I remember making these as a kid- thanks for the tutorial. I featured this tutorial today on my blog- can’t wait to make some! http://ificould-ificould.blogspot.com/2010/10/spooky-ghosts.html
How cute! I have got to make some, like, now!
Oh those are so cute! What a great idea! I wanted to let you know about a linky party/tutorial post I have started. It is called Handmade Tuesdays and I feature a tutorial from a crafter and then I have a linky where people can link up their projects. Please come link up every Tuesday!
Those are so cute! What a great idea – thanks for linking!
LOVE these ghost! Found you on Made By Heidi! Hope you’ll come visit SewWoodsy.blogspot.com
I did this craft a few weeks ago and will post about it shortly. When I popped the balloons, the cheesecloth deflated and a mess. Maybe I should have waited longer for the fabric stiffner to dry or I used too much of it.
Very clever and so neat.
We just did these too for the 15th year! I love your fat, squat version; they’re really cute!
OK – I’m going to have to make these with my little guy – he’ll love it! Thanks for sharing!
I love how these ghosts have an ethereal quality!
I am in love with theses. My girls are going to make some. They are fab. Thank you
Those are so cute and easy. I like the flowing effect of the cheesecloth.
Great minds think alike! I posted the same thing! It’s such a fun and simple little craft that always turns out magnificent!
