Tuesday Tutorial: Christmas Jammies

So for Christmas I always buy my kids PJ’s that they open on Christmas Eve. But I thought this year it would be fun to make them. My youngest daughter is obsessed right now with Hello Kitty and the color blue (for BYU)… and she has been begging me to buy her this Hello Kitty fabric from Hobby Lobby. It was so fun to make these for her because I know she is going to LOVE them when she opens them on Christmas Eve. I can’t wait to see her face!

OK these are really EASY!

Materials needed:

  • 1 yard of fabric (Depending on the size you are making)
  • 1 shirt
  • sewing machine
  • scissors
  • Ric Rac
  • 3/4″ Elastic
  • Iron
  • Heat and Bond
  • 1 pair of pajama pants for your pattern

Directions:

To make your Pajama Pant Pattern:

1. To make your Pajama Pant Pattern, place your pants on some tissue paper. Trace around the pants 1/4- 1/2 inch and 2 inches from the top and  2 inches bottom of the pants. Cut your pattern out

1. Fold the ends of your fabric so that the meet in the middle

2. Place your Pajama pant pattern on the FOLD of your fabric. Pin in place

3. Cut around the pattern do NOT cut into the fold of your fabric

4. place your pattern on the other side of your fabric on the fold and cut it out.

5. You should now have 2 leg pieces that look like this

6. Fold your Leg pieces Right Sides Together and Pin

7. Sew using a 1/4″ seam from the crotch of the pants to the bottom of the pants and do the same for the other pant piece.

8. Turn one of your Pant pieces Right Side Out

9. Place the Pant leg that is Right Side out into the other Pant leg, so that they are now RIGHT SIDES Together. Line up the seams

10. Pin the Crotch part of the pants and sew a 1/4″ You could reinforce this part by sewing another seam.

11. Pull the leg out and it should now look like this

12. Hem the top of the pants. fold over the raw edge a 1/2″ and press, then fold over 1″ and press with your iron

13. Pin and sew all the way around. Leave a 2″ opening to insert your elastic

14. insert your elastic into the opening with a safety pin

15. pull your elastic to your desired size of pant opening, sew the the elastic and cut the extra elastic off.

16. Sew your opening closed.

17. Hem the bottom of your pants by folding the raw edge up a 1/2″ and press with your iron. Then fold another inch and press with your iron. Pin and sew

18. Your pants should now look like this. Next, pin the ric rac to the bottom.

19. Pin the ric rac in your desired position, I use my seam as a guide. Sew down the middle of the ric rac.

20. I appliqued her name with my left over fabric onto a white shirt

21. You’re done! a cute handmade Jammie Set!

I just have to say that I am wearing pj’s out of that same fabric. I collect Hello Kitty things and certainly am too old to wear anything out of the house with her face on it. Your daughter will love them! Marry Christmas

Oh my goodness I wish I would have seen this before I bought my pattern, but on the other hand I was half way through with my pj’s and I saw this post and you helped me so much. Thank you I am bookmarker this post. It is so great to get a visual how the actual piece is suppose to look like. I have one down and 5 nightgowns to go before Christmas.

AWESOME! This is exactly what I was hoping to make for my daughters and nephews this Christmas! I just was not sure how to start… I guess now I have no excuse and better get the machine out and start sewing again.

I make pajamas for my grandkids every year — they open them up on Christmas Eve. I had done this for my 4 kids while they were growing up. Love the applique on the shirt. Do you have a machine for cutting the letters? If not, how did you do them? This would save me tons of time to not have to make the tops!

I’m so glad that you made Christmas PJ’s. I had planned on it, but it looks like it’s not going to happen. They turned out great.

I’d love it if you linked up this project at my Hip for the Holidays link party. I’m celebrating all things holiday apparel related, and these are perfect.
