Tuesday Tutorial: How to Make a Diaper Cake
So yesterday we had cupcakes:) This is a continuation of the Dr. Seuss Baby Shower I threw for my cute little sis-in-law.
A diaper cake is a fabulous way to decorate, and a great gift for new moms (Hello, diapers!!)
I LOVE these colors together!!
Would you like to make one?
Gather your supplies, and let’s do it!!
Just keep stuffing them inside the rubber band…
Make sure your top layer is even with the center.
For the display table I decided the tulle was a little much, so I added another ribbon to the top, and some paper shavings for more color!! (Sorry about the dumb spoon handle in the way:)

Monday Yummies: Dr. Suess Cupcakes
My brother and darling sister-in-law are having their first boy in a few more weeks (yay!) and I’m sooo excited for them. We threw them a Dr. Seuss themed baby shower, (more details on that to come)!
But now I will share these darling cupcakes and recipe with you:) I saw the idea for Cat in the Hat toppers over on Kara’s cupcakes, but made up my own recipe for the cupcake part…
Rich Delicious Chocolate Cupcakes
-
box devil’s food cake
-
1 box instant chocolate pudding
-
4 eggs
-
1/2 cup water
-
1/2 cup oil
-
1 cup sour cream
-
1 1/2 cups chocolate chips
Mix together all ingredients except for chocolate chips. Add the chocolate chips after everything else is completely blended. Fill cupcake paper liners halfway and bake according to directions on box. Cool completely. While cupcakes are cooling, make the chocolate covered oreos.
White Chocolate Oreo Cat in the Hats
-
1 bag Wilton candy melts (vanilla or white chocolate will work)
-
1 box of oreos
-
1 bag mint life savers
-
1 bag cherry life savers
Melt the white chocolate in the microwave for 30 seconds and stir. Repeat until you get a smooth dipping consistency. Coat oreos with the melted white chocolate and place on wax paper until chocolate is firm.
Stack the life savers on top of oreos. Red, white, and top with red. Use a dab of frosting to make them stick together.
Buttercream Frosting
-
1 stick butter (1/2 cup)
-
3 cups of sifted powdered sugar
-
3 to 5 Tbsp milk
-
1 tsp vanilla
-
blue food coloring
Blend the butter first, about 30 seconds. Next add the powdered sugar, vanilla, and start with 3 T of milk. Add more milk until you get the desired consistency. Add the food coloring.
I scooped the frosting into a ziploc bag, snipped off the corner, and used it to squeeze the frosting in a spiral design over top of cooled cupcakes.
Top with your “hats” and your finished!!
Super cute, and super yummy too!!!

Tuesday Tutorial: Sassy Girl Purse
My little 4 year old “fashionista” has been begging me for a Hello Kitty purse. She is obsessed right now with Hello Kitty! So after looking for a few months for some cute Hello Kitty fabric, we finally found this cute fabric at The Cotton Shop in Provo.
I have been making adult purses for a while so I took all the techniques from many pattern’s I have used to make this darling little bag. I used her favorite Jonas Bro. purse for my inspiration.
It was so fun to make her something I knew she would LOVE
Materials Needed:
- Little Girls Handbag to trace
- 1/4 yard of fabric for the outside print, purse strap
- 1/4 yard of fabric for the inside of the bag, pocket and Tab for the O Ring
- 1/4 yard of fusible fleece
- 1/2 yard of woven interfacing
- 2 sheets of paper to draw purse pattern on
- 1/8 yard of Knit fabric
- 5 inch circle of matching felt (match to the knit fabric)
- 2 O Rings
- Rotary Cutter and Mat, scissors
- Sewing machine
Trace half the bag on to half of the paper, trace 1/2″ around the purse
Fold the Paper in 1/2 so that half of the pattern is showing and it’s even, cut the pattern out on the fold
Fold in half and in the lower corner draw a small 3/4″ triangle
This is what the pattern looks like unfolded
Using your pattern, cut out two from both fabrics, 2 from the fusible fleece and 2 from the woven interfacing
Iron the Woven interfacing to the wrong side of the two outside fabrics. And iron the fusible fleece to the wrong sides of the inside pieces.
I’m sure most know how to make a pocket
Center the pocket on the inside fabric piece
I Reinforce the pocket because I know my little one is rough on her stuff!
Next, Sew the triangle closed. pinch them so right sides are together, sew 1/4″ from the edge (If this is confusing, email me and I will try and explain it better)
Here is another pic, of what I mean by sewing the triangles
Here is what it should look like once you have sewn them
Next, place the two outside pieces right side together and sew all the way from the top right, to the top left, Leave a 3 inch. opening at the bottom. Repeat for the Outside 2 pieces of fabric except, do NOT leave a opening in the bottom. Set aside
Cut a 1 inch x 58 inch piece of knit, ruffle it up. For more detailed instructions on how to ruffle go HERE
Pin the Ruffle to the Felt circle and either hand stitch it or machine sew it to the felt.
I can’t believe I FORGOT to take a picture of this step, Center and pin the flower on to the front of the purse and sew it on
Turn the inside (my pink polka-dot fabric) piece of fabric wrong side out. Place the outside (my Hello Kitty purse- piece) fabric into the (pink polka dot piece) fabric piece, so that RIGHT sides are facing each other. Sew around 1/4″ from the top edge
Here is what it should look like when the top edge is sewn all the way around
Pull the Outer fabric through the opening in the inside piece of fabric.
Sew 1/4″ around the top edge of the purse
Assemble the Purse Handle: Cut 2- 4.5″ x 5″ squares (of the inside print)
Cut 20″ x 6″ of the Main fabric and the woven interfacing. Iron on the interfacing
Long ways, iron in the outer edges in to the middle. And press in place, in half. Sew down a 1/8″ from both edges
Fold the fabric in half and add thread the O Ring. Sew a 1/4″ from the edge. Then turn it out so the raw edge is tucked in.
Pin The O rings evenly to the sides of the purse
sew a small square on the tab to secure to the purse. (My machine needle was so dull and I was out of needles that I had to hand stitch mine! err! but it worked out okay)
For the purse handle, Iron the (Short) ends 1/4″ in on both ends. Length wise, Iron the edges in to the middle and then in half. Sew 1/8″ all the way around the strip.
Attach the strap through the O ring and sew.
Don’t forget to sew the 3″ opening closed on the inside of the purse…
That’s it! Hope your little Sassy girl enjoys her new bag!
