Tuesday Tutorial: Holiday Burlap Bubble Wreath

YES!!!  I already made a wreath for Christmas!!  I’m just so excited you guys!!  This one is actually for my boy’s pre-school teacher, but I’m making mine tomorrow:)

So… I can’t really think of a better name for this wreath… I saw a cute tutorial on pinterest, that I used for inspiration, so we’ll just stick to burlap bubble:)

This is very simple, and requires just a handful of supplies!  Let’s get started…

Step 1:

You can use any amount of colors from one to tonz!!  I chose to use traditional red, white, and green.  I cut about 1/2 yard from each color, and divided the middle color in half, so it would be equal on either side.

Step 2:

Fold square in half.  Tuck left corner between front and back corner, hold in place.  Tuck right corner between front and back, hold in place.  Now you have a bubblish shape.

Step 3:

I wanted to make the red and green ends even before adding the white in between.

Step 4:

Tie your bow with ribbon or tulle, (I think I will try and find a coordinating ribbon for the next one:) and hang it on your door!!

Lots more Christmas crafts to come!!  And a fun giveaway in a couple of days, stop by again:)

DIY Cake Stand, & a Dessert that’s to die for!

So I’ve kind of taken a dessert making hiatus.  I normally LOVE baking, especially with chocolate:)

My little brother just turned the big 30, and requested one of my cakes…

I found this gorgeously delicious looking cake while browsing Pinterest, and knew I had to try it.  It was sooo rich, decadent, and YUM-O, definitely a special occasion cake.

So for all the cakes, pies, and desserts I make, you’d think I’d have something to show them off, right…

I’m embarrassed to say, I have yet to add this little necessity to my bakeware essentials.

So I decided to make my own!!

In a few simple steps you can make your very own cake stand too!!

  • Grab a few plastic platters from Hobby Lobby

  • Glue the bowl to the platter with E3000

  • Spray a few coats of spray paint, allow to dry completely  (I LOVE this glittery aqua color!!)

That’s it!  You’re done!!

Now you have a beautiful platter to display your beautiful dessert!!

*Make sure you use a paper liner or doily under the dessert, the paint is definitely not food safe…

The recipe for the cake can be found HERE, Enjoy!!!

Tuesday Tutorial: Painted Doily Canvas Bag & Giveaway

***Giveaway now closed***

My kiddos are starting school today!!!  Where in the world did our summer go!!!

Last week we had lots of fun shopping for school clothes, school supplies, meeting our teachers, and doing all things school related…

I’m already sooo impressed with my kids’ teachers, I wanted to make them a little goody bag with some handy dandy items for the school year.

I saw this darling idea on Pinterest… and followed the tutorial found HERE.

This is another super simple gift idea that would work for any occasion!! Would you like to make one??!!  Grab your supplies and let’s get to it:)

I decided to place one of the doilies in the center of the bag, and one of them toward the corner of the bag.

Cover the entire outer edge of the doily.

You should do this while the fabric paint is still wet.

This is how the bag looks with the doily along the corner…

I found this free printable HERE, and decided to frame it, and throw it in with the mix…

My mom just happens to be a totally awesome 2nd grade teacher.  She mentioned a few items that are always nice to have throughout the year:  clorox wipes, kleenex, hand sanitizer, and ziploc bags.

The only thing missing is a personalized tag from my little student:)

Here’s another look at the other bag…

My little rascals on their last “free” summer evening!

Hope you all survive your “back to school” weeks!!

Ok!  Ready for the giveaway!!

I will make the winner their very own personalized doily canvas bag, and fill it up with a few surprise goodies from my Etsy shop.   Sound good!

Tuesday Tutorial: Guest Post, Little Prince’s Tunic

I’m so excited to have our first guest tutorial on Just Sew Sassy!!

Kimberly from Mommyhood Craft Corner, is bursting with talent and inspiration!  Are you looking for some darling projects to do with your kids, go check out her blog!!  I can’t for you to see what she has for us today, but first check out some of my favorite projects she has made…

I LOVE this seed pack tutorial

Need a cute idea for a little girl’s birthday party, check out this adorable princess party!!

And I think this artwork box is such a clever way to store your kid’s masterpieces:)

Alright Kimberly, take it away!!!

Thank you so much for allowing me to share this tutorial with you!  My name is Kimberly and I share my children’s craft projects at my blog Mommyhood Craft Corner; I’m so glad to be here at Just Sew Sassy!

This photo is of my one year old son dressed as a prince (minus a crown) for his sister’s princess-themed 4th birthday party. My daughter was decked out in all her princess glory, and it seemed appropriate that the little guy should get to dress up, too, so I gathered a few craft supplies I had on hand and made this little Prince’s Tunic for my little boy.

It’s very easy, because this tunic is made with felt and materials that don’t have to be hemmed. And if you aren’t handy with a needle and thread, I would assume you could use craft or fabric glue of some kind to get the job done, as well!

Little Prince’s Tunic

This tunic should fit children wearing size 24 months and under. You can trim the felt down to fit much younger babies, as well. I “eye-balled” everything when making this little tunic and made it up as I went along, so the instructions do not have precise measurements, but they should guide you through theprocess just fine. Let’s get started…

Materials:

  • 2 sheets of felt for the body

  • 1 sheet of felt for the front design

  • Ribbon for initial and shoulders

  • Beads for decoration

  • Needle and thread (or glue)

  • Pins for securing while stitching

  • Scissors

Step 1: Design the front of the tunic.

  • From a sheet of felt, freehand draw and cut a shield-like shape or any shape you like for the front of the tunic. Secure it with pins onto the center of the piece of felt you want to be the front of the tunic and stitch it on.

  • Next, cut some ribbon to the length necessary for creating your child’s initial and stitch it on top.

  • Finally, stitch on some beads for a little extra dose of royalty.

Step 2: Create the form of the tunic.

  • Cut the bottom edge of the sheets of felt which will be the front and back of the tunic. I just curved the corners, but you could do something more creative (like a scalloped edge or “dental molding” shape). You can draw your cut lines onto the inside of the felt before actually cutting, if you like.

  • Lay the two pieces of felt on top of each other and cut the scoop at the top which will be the neckline. You may want to start small and then keep cutting it larger until you feel confident that your child’s head will fit through.

Step 3: Create the shoulders.

  • Lay the front and back pieces of your tunic on top of one of another with the wrong sides out.

  • Now stitch along the edge of each shoulder to secure the sheets of felt together.

Step 4: Embellish the shoulders.

  • With the same (or different) ribbon you used for the initial on the front of the tunic, cut two lengths of ribbon to be used on the shoulders. Cut your ribbon pieces a little longer than the width of the shoulder they will be attached to, so you will have some length to tuck underneath at the edges.

  • Now pin your ribbons in place with the edges tucked under and stitch them on.

  • Add a few more beads across each ribbon (you can’t see them well in my photos, but they are there).

You’re done! Now find your precious little prince, dress him up, and party!

His sword was created with a bubble wand and some cardboard painted green. Watch him and Grandma taking out those ferocious balloons from his sister’s birthday party! What a handsome little fella!

Thanks for stopping by Kimberly!!

Tuesday Tutorial: Easy Patriotic Paper Medallion Banner

I have always loved the look of paper medallions.  They’re sooo festive.  Of course I had to tie them into my 4th of July decor, so I decided to make a banner!!

Would you like to make one for your next 4th of July get together!

Here’s what you’ll need to whip up your own little banner:

  • 7 sheets of coordinating paper

  • 2 or 3 sheets of coordinating cardstock

  • printed letters (I found these on pinterest) go to At Second Street for a free printable

  • twine

  • ribbon for embellishing

  • clothes pins

  • cutting tool

  • ruler

  • hot glue gun

I lined up 3 pieces of paper, and used the ruler to draw lines across all three pieces at a time to create score marks

Now your going to fold the ends together, creating a circle shape.  Hot glue your ends closed, keeping the middle pinched.

I wish I had a mantel to hang this across, but my railing will have to do!!  Super easy fun banner for the 4th!!

Patriotic Pinwheel Centerpiece

***Don’t forget to enter our giveaways happening right now!!  $30 certificate to Happy Potamus Designs, Darling Summer Block Kit, Three patterns from Sew Much Ado, and Vinyl Labels from Lolly Jane***

Ok, so the 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays, and I kinda go all out when it comes to decorating…

Maybe I even go a little overboard:)

I’ve got lots of fun little projects to show ya!!  We’ll start with a simple table centerpiece…

I’m loving the pinwheel trend that I’m seeing all over blogland.  I think they’re darling, and such a simple craft to customize for every holiday!  This is my version…

Make the pinwheel by cutting two squares (I made one 6 inches and the other 4 inches)

Glue the smaller of the squares on top.  Cut slits from each corner, toward the center of the square about 3 inches long.

Fold each corner in (without creasing) and hold together with a brad.

Sorry for the lack of pictures… I just thought this one was easy enough to explain in words:)

Soooo fun huh!!!

Tuesday Tutorial: Tiered Ribbon Necklace

Are you still looking for a mother’s day gift to make?! How about a tiered necklace?? My mother in law is really into necklaces right now and I thought I would try my hand at making her one. (I HOPE she doesn’t see this!) I saw this awesome tutorial a while back and I have been working up the courage to make my own!  Here is my version…

Materials Needed:

  • 48″ Chain (can be found at the craft store)
  • 60″ Chain
  • 3/8″ Ribbon
  • Necklace clasp
  • Small jump rings
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Fabric for the flower embellishment
  • Brad or button
  • Glue Gun
  • Scissors

Using the pliers open the 60″ chain and take off the extra chain. Make it 32″ long.

Break up the smaller chain with your pliers into 2 strands.

Attach each end of the strand to to a Jump ring

Weave your ribbon through the wider chain (weave both strands)

Tie a knot at the ends of each strand of chain. I used a lighter to seal the ends of the ribbon to prevent fraying.

Attach all strands to one Jump ring. Do not close the Jump ring yet. Set aside

With the 32″ chain folded in half, measure up 8.5″ from the bottom and weave the ribbon

Knot the ends and cut off the extra ribbon

Attach the Jump rings holding the tiered strands to the main necklace. Fasten the Jump rings closed with the pliers

Tie a Ribbon in a bow on one side of the necklace and add your flower embellishment to the other side.

Attach the clasp to the open end of the necklace with the pliers

Thanks to my gorgeous friend Brittny for being my model :)

You’re done!

Tuesday Tutorial: Ruffle Flower Clutch

I have seen these flowers everywhere and they are so cute! I saw a pouch similar to this one and thought I would try and make my own.

Okay, I know we have had a few tutorials involving ruffles over here, but we are a little obsessed right now! LOL!

Materials Needed:

2- 6″x 10″  Pieces of outer fabric

2- 6″ x 10″ pieces of fabric for the inside

2- 6″ x 10″ pieces of interfacing

1- 9 inch. zipper

1-  1″ x 50″ strip of chiffon for the ruffle flower (I sewed 2 strips together)

1- 2.5″ x 12″ strip of fabric for the wrist strap

1- 2″ x 3″ strip of fabric for the tab on the clutch

1- 2″ x 3″ strip of interfacing

Key chain clasp and ring

Rotary cutter and Mat

Sewing machine

Directions:

Interface the outer pieces of fabric. Gather your Chiffon strip. I just set my tension on my machine all the way up and set my stitch on the longest setting.

Pin the ruffle in a flower pattern on 1 of the outer pieces of fabric

Stitch the ruffle on

Interface the 3″ strip

Iron the 2 edges into the middle and then iron in half. Top stitch the edges closed. Do the same for the 12″ strip

Baste the 3″ tab in place. 3/4″ from the top left edge

Sew your zipper on, for directions on how to do this go to THIS post.

Pull the strip through the clasp. Stitch the ends closed

Turn the strip right side out so the raw edge is tucked under now

Top-stitch the raw edges by the key chain clasp.

Attach the key chain- ring to the tab on the pouch

Done!!

All wrapped up and pretty!

I love how the chiffon looks when it’s all frayed. But I can’t wait to try this again with other fabrics. I made this for my daughter’s teacher, I really hope she likes it!
