Tuesday Tutorial: Tiered Ribbon Necklace

Are you still looking for a mother’s day gift to make?! How about a tiered necklace?? My mother in law is really into necklaces right now and I thought I would try my hand at making her one. (I HOPE she doesn’t see this!) I saw this awesome tutorial a while back and I have been working up the courage to make my own!  Here is my version…

Materials Needed:

  • 48″ Chain (can be found at the craft store)
  • 60″ Chain
  • 3/8″ Ribbon
  • Necklace clasp
  • Small jump rings
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Fabric for the flower embellishment
  • Brad or button
  • Glue Gun
  • Scissors

Using the pliers open the 60″ chain and take off the extra chain. Make it 32″ long.

Break up the smaller chain with your pliers into 2 strands.

Attach each end of the strand to to a Jump ring

Weave your ribbon through the wider chain (weave both strands)

Tie a knot at the ends of each strand of chain. I used a lighter to seal the ends of the ribbon to prevent fraying.

Attach all strands to one Jump ring. Do not close the Jump ring yet. Set aside

With the 32″ chain folded in half, measure up 8.5″ from the bottom and weave the ribbon

Knot the ends and cut off the extra ribbon

Attach the Jump rings holding the tiered strands to the main necklace. Fasten the Jump rings closed with the pliers

Tie a Ribbon in a bow on one side of the necklace and add your flower embellishment to the other side.

Attach the clasp to the open end of the necklace with the pliers

Thanks to my gorgeous friend Brittny for being my model :)

You’re done!

Tuesday Tutorial: Christmas Grove Centerpiece

Ok, so I made a Christmas tablerunner a couple of weeks ago, and I couldn’t decide what to do for a centerpiece this year…

I’ve seen these darling ribbon trees around blogland, and I’m going to show you how to make one, along with the peppermint tree.  This was a fun craft to do with my kids, (they ate about half the peppermints along the way:)

Supplies:

  • 3 cardboard cones (I bought mine at Hobby Lobby)
  • spools of ribbon
  • hot glue gun
  • peppermint pinwheels
  • tulle

Step 1:

We’ll start with the the peppermint tree.  Unwrap each candy and begin by hot glueing them one at a time starting at the base of the tree.

Continue gluing until you reach the top.  Then do the same on the opposite side of the tree.

Start the next row in between the first two.  For example, 12′oclock, 6′oclock, 3′oclock, and 9′oclock.

Then you can fill in the other rows in between.  As you get closer to the top, you can use half pieces of the peppermints.

When I was done, I tied a ribbon at the top.  You can add a star, a bow, whatever you like…

Step 2:

Onto the next tree.  Start by cutting small strips of ribbon about 5 inches long.

I used 4 different types, but you can use as many as you would like.

Next, glue the ends together to form a loop.

Now, starting from the base, glue each loop to the tree, alternating colors and work your way all the way around.

On the second row, attach the loops so that they cover the gaps from the bottom row.

Continue filling in the gaps all the way to the top.

Ok, 2 trees down, one to go…

For the last tree, there’s really no trick.  I cut 4 pieces of tulle about 40 inches in length, 2 red and 2 green.   Fold the strip in half and begin wrapping it around the tree in a criss-cross fashion.  Secure at the ends with hot glue.   Repeat, alternating colors.  Finish by tying another big bow at the top!

To stagger the height of each tree, I cut the bottom off of one tree. Because the ribbon hangs down so much I propped the ribbon tree on top of an empty spool of ribbon. The last tree I left the same, in order to get 3 different heights.

I love the bright colors of the trees!  I LOVE how it turned out!!    You can play around with these trees a ton using your own personal style!  Have fun…

Tuesday Tutorial: Halloween Ribbon Ornaments & a Giveaway!!

Hey ladies!!  (And dudes too, if you’re out there), I always wonder who really reads this blog…  ya know?

Sorry, I know random.

We’re making a super fun and totally simple craft today for Halloween.  I made these for my son’s spooky birthday party this weekend!  They’re darling little Halloween ribbon ornaments.

Oh BTW, make sure and check out the bottom of this post for a pretty cool Just Sew Sassy announcement:)

Sorry, on to the tutorial…

Halloweeen Ribbon Ornaments

Supplies:

  • lots of Halloween colored ribbon for the ornaments and thinner ribbon for hanging
  • precut circles of Halloween paper, you’ll need about 10 each of 2 sizes (I used the base of a spool of thread to make one size, and a glue stick to make the other, haha original right:)
  • buttons
  • glue gun and sticks
  • scissors or rotary cutter and mat

Step 1:

Cut your ribbon.  I’m going to show you how to make three different ornaments.  I started by cutting the ribbon into strips for each one of the ornaments.

For the first one, cut 3 strips of ribbon about 7 inches in length.

For the next one, cut 3 strips of ribbon 4 inches in length, and then cut the ends to form an inverted “v” shape.

Sorry, I forgot to take a picture of this step with the green ribbon, but its just like this.

For the last ornament, cut 4 strips of ribbon about 5 1/2 inches in length.

Step 2:

-K- you’re done with the cutting, next comes the hot glue!  (Keep in mind, you can also sew these together, but I thought the hot glue would be a faster, easier route for me)

Going back to the first ornament.  Glue the ends together to form a circle.

Then place a dab of glue in the inside center, and squish down to form a bowtie shape.

Repeat with the the two other ribbons.

Then glue the three bowtie shapes together, one on top of the other to form a flower shape.

-K-  we’ll come back to this one in a sec.

Moving on to the second ornament.  Glue each of the 3 ribbons on top of one another to form a star shape.

And, moving on to the third ornament.

Fold the ribbon in half to form a loop, and secure the end with glue.

Repeat with all four ribbons.  Then glue one loop on top of the other to form a different kind of flower shape.

Step 3:

Next, you gotta glue the paper centers to your ornaments.  You can mix and match, and even throw in some buttons if you prefer:)

Just hot glue those little circles (and or buttons) right to the center of your shapes.

Step 4:

Glue the skinnier ribbon together to form a loop, and attach it to the back of the ornament with you guessed it, more hot glue!

Voila!!

-K- so I totally forgot or somehow deleted the last picture of my looped ornament, but you can see a few of them hanging on my spooky branches…

And here’s a shot of the birthday party spread…
