Tuesday Tutorial: Boy Christmas Gift, Monster Applique Tee

So while perusing pinterest, I saw this darling monster shirt!!  I knew I could make it, but was curious where I could buy it. Guess what!!  It wasn’t for sale anymore… So my decision was made.  These would be perfect Christmas gifts for my monster lovin boys!!

This is basically an applique tutorial, super simple, so grab your supplies and let’s go!!

I’m making two shirts at a time here, so forgive me for switching in and out of pictures…

I decided to iron both my big monster felt pieces at once to save on heat-n-bond.

I actually ironed my scrap pieces of felt to the heat-n-bond before cutting the shapes out.  It just makes them easier to cut.  Just have an idea of how much of your scrap piece you will need, for whatever add-ons you decide to give your monster.

I left a bit of an opening at the bottom for the teeth to slide into.

This will secure everything and keep it nice through all your washes.

So I made my 3 yr-old try his Christmas present on.  I know, lame.

I didn’t tell him what it was for, I just told him if he put the shirt on and let me take his picture, I would give him chocolate.  He will do anything for chocolate.  He takes after his mama:)

and then he looked at his shirt…

and thought it was pretty cool…

So we had to take it off quick before he could ask any questions…

You could totally customize this for a girl as well, I may just do that for my 6 yr-old!!  Have fun creating!

Kids Felt Car Mat

Hey Everyone! Hope you all are having a fabulous summer! It has been way too long since I have blogged on here! I have been busy working and playing hard this summer with my kiddos.

Staci asked me if I would post this felt car mat that I made for my kids.

It’s so funny but my girls LOVE playing with cars and trucks they spend hours playing with them. They have been begging me for a car mat and I was going to buy one until I found these 2 super AWESOME tutorials. We used some great ideas from A Girl and a Glue Gun.

And Allison from Oopsey Daisy had the best idea to use fabric transfer paper for the building logos.

So After a dozen or so glue sticks, we we’re done!  We had a blast making this and the kids LOVE their new car mat!

Tuesday Tutorial: Guest Post, Little Prince’s Tunic

I’m so excited to have our first guest tutorial on Just Sew Sassy!!

Kimberly from Mommyhood Craft Corner, is bursting with talent and inspiration!  Are you looking for some darling projects to do with your kids, go check out her blog!!  I can’t for you to see what she has for us today, but first check out some of my favorite projects she has made…

I LOVE this seed pack tutorial

Need a cute idea for a little girl’s birthday party, check out this adorable princess party!!

And I think this artwork box is such a clever way to store your kid’s masterpieces:)

Alright Kimberly, take it away!!!

Thank you so much for allowing me to share this tutorial with you!  My name is Kimberly and I share my children’s craft projects at my blog Mommyhood Craft Corner; I’m so glad to be here at Just Sew Sassy!

This photo is of my one year old son dressed as a prince (minus a crown) for his sister’s princess-themed 4th birthday party. My daughter was decked out in all her princess glory, and it seemed appropriate that the little guy should get to dress up, too, so I gathered a few craft supplies I had on hand and made this little Prince’s Tunic for my little boy.

It’s very easy, because this tunic is made with felt and materials that don’t have to be hemmed. And if you aren’t handy with a needle and thread, I would assume you could use craft or fabric glue of some kind to get the job done, as well!

Little Prince’s Tunic

This tunic should fit children wearing size 24 months and under. You can trim the felt down to fit much younger babies, as well. I “eye-balled” everything when making this little tunic and made it up as I went along, so the instructions do not have precise measurements, but they should guide you through theprocess just fine. Let’s get started…

Materials:

  • 2 sheets of felt for the body

  • 1 sheet of felt for the front design

  • Ribbon for initial and shoulders

  • Beads for decoration

  • Needle and thread (or glue)

  • Pins for securing while stitching

  • Scissors

Step 1: Design the front of the tunic.

  • From a sheet of felt, freehand draw and cut a shield-like shape or any shape you like for the front of the tunic. Secure it with pins onto the center of the piece of felt you want to be the front of the tunic and stitch it on.

  • Next, cut some ribbon to the length necessary for creating your child’s initial and stitch it on top.

  • Finally, stitch on some beads for a little extra dose of royalty.

Step 2: Create the form of the tunic.

  • Cut the bottom edge of the sheets of felt which will be the front and back of the tunic. I just curved the corners, but you could do something more creative (like a scalloped edge or “dental molding” shape). You can draw your cut lines onto the inside of the felt before actually cutting, if you like.

  • Lay the two pieces of felt on top of each other and cut the scoop at the top which will be the neckline. You may want to start small and then keep cutting it larger until you feel confident that your child’s head will fit through.

Step 3: Create the shoulders.

  • Lay the front and back pieces of your tunic on top of one of another with the wrong sides out.

  • Now stitch along the edge of each shoulder to secure the sheets of felt together.

Step 4: Embellish the shoulders.

  • With the same (or different) ribbon you used for the initial on the front of the tunic, cut two lengths of ribbon to be used on the shoulders. Cut your ribbon pieces a little longer than the width of the shoulder they will be attached to, so you will have some length to tuck underneath at the edges.

  • Now pin your ribbons in place with the edges tucked under and stitch them on.

  • Add a few more beads across each ribbon (you can’t see them well in my photos, but they are there).

You’re done! Now find your precious little prince, dress him up, and party!

His sword was created with a bubble wand and some cardboard painted green. Watch him and Grandma taking out those ferocious balloons from his sister’s birthday party! What a handsome little fella!

Thanks for stopping by Kimberly!!

Tuesday Tutorial: Sassy Girl Purse

My little 4 year old “fashionista” has been begging me for a Hello Kitty purse. She is obsessed right now with Hello Kitty! So after looking for a few months for some cute Hello Kitty fabric, we finally found this cute fabric at The Cotton Shop in Provo.

I have been making adult purses for a while so I took all the techniques from many pattern’s I have used to make this darling little bag. I used her favorite Jonas Bro. purse for my inspiration.

It was so fun to make her something I knew she would LOVE

Materials Needed:

  • Little Girls Handbag to trace
  • 1/4 yard of fabric for the outside print, purse strap
  • 1/4 yard of fabric for the inside of the bag, pocket and Tab for the O Ring
  • 1/4 yard of fusible fleece
  • 1/2 yard of woven interfacing
  • 2 sheets of paper to draw purse pattern on
  • 1/8 yard of Knit fabric
  • 5 inch circle of matching felt (match to the knit fabric)
  • 2 O Rings
  • Rotary Cutter and Mat, scissors
  • Sewing machine

Trace half the bag on to half of the paper, trace 1/2″ around the purse

Fold the Paper in 1/2 so that half of the pattern is showing and it’s even, cut the pattern out on the fold

Fold in half and in the lower corner draw a small 3/4″ triangle

This is what the pattern looks like unfolded

Using your pattern, cut out two from both fabrics, 2 from the fusible fleece and 2 from the woven interfacing

Iron the Woven interfacing to the wrong side of the two outside fabrics. And iron the fusible fleece to the wrong sides of the inside pieces.

I’m sure most know how to make a pocket :) Center the pocket on the inside fabric piece

I Reinforce the pocket because I know my little one is rough on her stuff!

Next, Sew the triangle closed. pinch them so right sides are together, sew 1/4″ from the edge (If this is confusing, email me and I will try and explain it better)

Here is another pic, of what I mean by sewing the triangles

Here is what it should look like once you have sewn them

Next, place the two outside pieces right side together and sew all the way from the top right, to the top left, Leave a 3 inch. opening at the bottom. Repeat for the Outside 2 pieces of fabric except, do NOT leave a opening in the bottom. Set aside

Cut a 1 inch x 58 inch piece of knit, ruffle it up. For more detailed instructions on how to ruffle go HERE

Pin the Ruffle to the Felt circle and either hand stitch it or machine sew it to the felt.

I can’t believe I FORGOT to take a picture of this step, Center and pin the flower on to the front of the purse and sew it on

Turn the inside (my pink polka-dot fabric) piece of fabric wrong side out. Place the outside (my Hello Kitty purse- piece) fabric into the (pink polka dot piece) fabric piece, so that RIGHT sides are facing each other.  Sew around 1/4″ from the top edge

Here is what it should look like when the top edge is sewn all the way around

Pull the Outer fabric through the opening in the inside  piece of fabric.

Sew 1/4″ around the top edge of the purse

Assemble the Purse Handle: Cut  2- 4.5″ x 5″ squares (of the inside print)

Cut 20″ x 6″ of the Main fabric and the woven interfacing. Iron on the interfacing

Long ways, iron in the outer edges in to the middle. And press in place, in half. Sew down a 1/8″ from both edges

Fold the fabric in half and add thread the O Ring. Sew a 1/4″ from the edge. Then turn it out so the raw edge is tucked in.

Pin The O rings evenly to the sides of the purse

sew a small square on the tab to secure to the purse. (My machine needle was so dull and I was out of needles that I had to hand stitch mine! err! but it worked out okay)

For the purse handle, Iron the (Short) ends 1/4″ in on both ends. Length wise, Iron the edges in to the middle and then in half. Sew 1/8″ all the way around the strip.

Attach the strap through the O ring and sew.

Don’t forget to sew the 3″ opening closed on the inside of the purse…

That’s it! Hope your little Sassy girl enjoys her new bag!

Sewing without a Pattern: I Must be Crazy!!

This is the first dress, or article of clothing I should say, that I have ever attempted.

The goal was, an Easter dress in time for Easter Sunday…

without a pattern…

Yep, I know. I’m a little bit crazy!! But I tend to wing it for most things. I’ve got about a 50/50 success rate, so I thought, why not give it a shot:)

But know what, I think it turned out alright!

And my little girl loves it!!

Ya can’t tell, can you:)

And she had to have a pretty little headband to coordinate of course…
