Tuesday Tutorial: Framed Heart Art Centerpiece

Holy Moly!!!  Where did the week go!!  I mean weekend??  I had a couple of posts planned for this weekend, and umm, they will have to wait until next weekend I guess, sorry about that friends!!

I have a couple more Valentines tutorials for ya, so you can be all decked out ad ready for the day of LOVE!!

Today I’m gonna show ya how to make framed heart art:)

Supplies:

  • an old frame

  • red spray paint

  • scrapbook paper

  • vinyl or cardstock

  • yarn

  • hot glue

First, you’re going to paint your frame.

Next, cut a scrap of paper to go in the frame.

I glued this right to the cardboard piece in the back of my frame.

For this next step you can either use vinyl or cardstock, I chose vinyl b/c I think its easier to work with using the Silhouette.

Find a heart template, or create your own.  I knew I was going to make 3 rows of 3 hearts, so I found a template with three hearts in a row.

Cut out the heart design.

Attach some transfer paper to the vinyl and place it right on the paper.

Repeat until you have the desired amount of rows and hearts.  For the last heart, I used the same template and cut some red patterned paper out of cardstock.

Lastly, use a pencil to trace a word, (I used love) and follow the lines with a hot glue gun.  Immediately add the yarn to the hot glue, and trim after each letter.

And you’re done!!

I found the best invention ever at Hobby Lobby last weekend and had to try it out with this project.  It’s a pom pom maker!!  You basically wind the yarn around, tie it off, snip it, and you’re done.  I filled up an apothecary jar with these little yarn pom poms to coordinate with the  yarn from the frame.

I can’t wait to make a garland with the stuff too!!!

Have fun yarning it up:)

Tuesday Tutorial: Berry Framed Valentines Wreath

I saw this wreath on Pinterest the other day, and new I had to make one!!!  Thanks to Lil Luna for the fabulous tutorial!!

I usually throw up my berry wreath for Valentines Day and call it good, but after seeing Lil Luna’s version, I knew I could add something more to my plain old berry wreath!!

I have to say, I LOVE how it turned out!!

I had everything on hand so this wreath cost me a total of $0!!!

If you would like to make your own here is what you’ll need,

Supplies:

  • a large berry wreath (most are on sale right now in the Christmas Clearance)

  • an old 8X10 frame

  • red spray paint

  • scrapbook paper

  • vinyl and a cutter

  • embellishments (felt, lace, buttons)

  • ribbon

  • hot glue

Step 1:  Remove everything from the back of your frame before painting

I wanted the brown to show through a bit, so I only used one coat of paint.

Step 2:  Decide on a font, and the correct sizing of your letters to fit inside the frame.  Cut the vinyl.  (You could also use chipboard or cardstock if you don’t have vinyl)

Step 3:  Cut the scrapbook paper to fit the inside of your frame.

Cut small triangles to make a pendant.  Apply vinyl to the paper and the triangles.  Decide on the placement of everything before securing with hot glue.

Step 4:  Cut a couple strands of bakers twine, (you could also use ric-rac, ribbon, lace, or twine) and attach with hot glue.  Add the rest of your letters.

Embellish the side of the paper.

Step 5:  Add the finished paper to the frame.

Embellish the frame with flowers and buttons.

Attach the ribbon to the back of the frame and tie around the berry wreath.  Hang your new LOVEly wreath on your front door and enjoy!!!

Tuesday Tutorial: Folded Felt Decor Balls

Ok, I know I’m totally on a decor ball kick lately (and don’t you worry, I still have more where this all came from) HAHA!!

I don’t know what it is, I just think there are so many looks you can create with a styrofoam ball, ya know!

So… I tried it with felt this time.  And I feel so bad, I saw a similar technique on someone’s blog (to the one I’m using today), only on the blog, the person  made hair flowers.  I don’t remember where!!  Help me out if you know, so I can give credit where it’s due!

Supplies:

  • Stryrofoam balls (the size depends on the look you’re going for), I used a 5 in floral foam ball.

  • about 3/4 yard felt (for one ball)

  • straight pins

  • cutting mat and rotary cutter or scissors

  • Circle template or a glass

  • fabric pencil

  • a roll of tape

Step 1:

Trace your template onto the felt.

Cut around the circle.  I kept one circle free, and used it over and over to cut lots and lots of circles.

Fold up your felt a couple of times to cut more and save time.  I wish I had counted all the circles, I’m guessing around 80 or so…

Step 2:  Next you will fold your circle in half.

Then in half again.

Step 3:  Take a straight pin and insert it in the bottom of the fold holding it all together.

Then using the same pin, poke it securely into the stryrofoam ball, at an angle so it will stand up.  Place the ball on a roll of tape to keep it from rolling all around.

I had a little helper doing this part for me, while I continued to cut the circles.  (This is such an easy fun craft to do with your kids!)

Continue with all your circles, filling in the gaps with more folded circles.

That’s it!!

Super easy huh!  Stick them on a candlestick, candle holder, hang them with ribbon, group them as a centerpiece, the possibilities are endless!!

I can’t wait to make some more in spring colors!!  Or maybe I just can’t wait for spring:)

Just a Couple of Balls and some Tissue Paper…

I saw this idea for crepe paper rosettes over on House of Smiths, and was so excited when I found some beautiful candlesticks I could use as my base!

I actually used the huge stash of tissue paper I already had for the rosettes, following the same technique that Shelly did.  A couple of movies, and hot glue burns later….

Ta Da!!

Tuesday Tutorial: A Little T-Shirt Love

Do your kids own any old t-shirts?  How about old white t-shirts, maybe even with a couple of stains, maybe even a couple that are a little on the small side…

Well, my 6 yr-old has for sure grown a foot or two (ok, maybe an inch or two) and I can’t keep up with her shrinking wardrobe!!  I decided to add a few more months to some shirts.

This “plain white T” got some love just in time for Valentines Day:)

Supplies:

  • old t- shirt
  • long strip of fabric (40 ish inches will do)
  • scrap fabric for your applique
  • heat-n-bond
  • cutting mat and rotary cutter
  • sewing machine
  • thread
  • embellishments

Step 1:

***NOTE*** Wash all fabric before cutting and sewing.  Decide how long you would like the bottom ruffle to be, this will be the width of your strip.  Measure the circumference of the base of your shirt.  You’ll need at least 1 and 1/2 times or 2 times that amount for the length of your strip.  JJ’s shirt was 25 inches, so I would need at least 36 inches.  Cut or trim your fabric.  I already had a scrap of fabric that measured 40 inches X 10 inches wide, which was perfect!  Love when that happens.

Now cut your letters or applique design.  (I used my Silhouette for the first time for this project, and I have to admit, I was a little intimidated at first, but I DID IT!!) So, whatever method you decide to use, cut your letters out.

Step 2:  Using the directions on your adhesive paper, attach the fabric to the adhesive paper.  For Heat N Bond, you place the adhesive side against the back (wrong side) of your fabric, and iron the paper side for a couple of seconds, just until it bonds.

Next, flip your cut-out letters around, (so they’re mirrored) and trace around them on the paper side of the Heat n Bond.

Cut your letters out, and peel away the paper backing, revealing the adhesive side of the letter.

Place the letters or design, right side up, with the adhesive against the t-shirt.  Place the iron on top of the fabric for 8 or 9 seconds.  Straight stitch along the edge of the letters.

For the “O” in this version, I decided to make a fabric yoyo, and sew a button to the center.  You can embellish however you would like!!

If you like the yoyo idea, there’s a great tutorial HERE.

Step 3:

Make your ruffle.  Hem the strip of fabric by folding each side in 1/4 inch, and then another 1/4 inch.  Press and pin in place.  Next, sew along the folded edge.

On one side of the strip, sew a gathering stitch (longest stitch setting on your sewing machine) from one end to the other.  Pull the bobbin thread to gather up the ruffle.

Step 4:  Attach your ruffle to the shirt.  First, sew both ends of the ruffle together, right sides together, forming a little skirt.  (I forgot this step, so in the picture I hadn’t sewn the ruffle ends together yet, but it works much better if you do, trust me:)  Turn the ruffle so the right side is touching the right side of the t-shirt, and the ruffled edge is against the bottom hem of the t-shirt.  Starting at one side seam, pin all around the base of your shirt.

Then sew the ruffle to the shirt using a straight stitch and about 1/2 seam, all along the base of the shirt.

Flip the ruffle over, press in place, and voila!!  A little ruffle goes a long way!!

I made some fun little “love” shirts for my boys too, I LOVE how the mustaches add some boy charm to such a frilly girly holiday:)

You can totally make your own, but for the next couple of weeks we will have them for sale in our Etsy Shop, just in time for Valentines!!

V-day Candy Jar Makeover

***  Don’t forget to enter our Valentines Day Giveaway for a chance to win one of Marina’s darling hand-made purses HERE***

Ok, so this was my attempt idea to stay clear of the candy this season.  You know, once it’s in a cute jar it becomes more of a decoration and it’s harder to eat…

Ha Ha!!  That was a good one huh!

Yeah, I just keep buying bags of M&M’s to re-fill it everyday  every week.

So I started out with this…

(I know, I’m kind of chocolate obsessed, just moving from one candy to the next)

And ended up with this!

This is just my little corner counter display:)

I think I need another handful of M&Ms!!

I’ll catchya later:)
